“OUR GOAL IS TO INCREASE EXPORTS 16% ANNUALLY”

El gremio de exportadores esta de plácemes. El actual Ministro de Economía, Ingeniero Marcio Cuevas, conoce mejor que nadie las necesidades, penas y alegrías del gremio exportador, al haber fungido como Presidente de AGEXPRONT hasta el 2003. En las respuestas que dió a The Magazine Apparel Sourcing Show, habló sobre el apoyo que dará su despacho al gremio de la industria textil y de confección.

Apparel: Señor Ministro, ¿el cambio de Gobierno en Guatemala ha mejorado el clima para el inversionista extranjero?

MC: Por supuesto. La visión de este Gobierno es de trabajo en equipo, en conjunto con el sector empresarial, para retomar el camino del desarrollo económico del país que se había visto estancado.

A: El Apparel Sourcing Show tiene lugar habiendo pasado poco más de los 100 días iniciales de gobierno. ¿Cuáles son los factores que más han tenido en cuenta en los planes para estos cuatro años?

MC: Reforzar el clima positivo para atraer inversiones. Dentro de nuestro compromiso con la competitividad sistémica, incluimos fortalecer la oficina de atracción de inversiones, Invest in Guatemala. La reactivación de foros mixtos de comercio exterior. Recuperar el liderazgo comercial en Centro América, relanzar el PRONACOM y cabildear y divulgar el TLC con Estados Unidos. Estamos haciendo un análisis de “bench marking” y analizando la oferta de los países vecinos para posicionarnos correctamente.

A: Para la industria de la confección en particular, ¿qué ventajas ofrece hoy Guatemala al inversionista extranjero?

MC: Es la economía mas grande de la región. Geográficamente nuestra posición es inmejorable y contamos con mano de obra muy calificada. Tendremos una página web muy accesible, para facilitar captación de inversionistas extranjeros. Dentro del

The exporting sector could not be happier. The appointed Minister of Economy, Marcio Cuevas, knows better than anyone the needs, sorrows and joys of the exporting sector, having been President of AGEXPRONT until 2003. In an interview with The Magazine Apparel Sourcing Show he spoke about the support for the textile and apparel industry.

Apparel: Has the change of Administration in Guatemala improved the climate for foreign investors?

MC: Certainly. This Administration’s perspective is that Of team work, jointly with the private sector, to Rejoin the road to economic development of the Country, which had become stagnant.

A: The Apparel Sourcing Show is taking place some time after the Government’s first 100 days. What are the issues you have most taken into account in your plans for these four years?

MC: Reinforce the positive environment to attract investments. As part of our commitment to systemic competitiveness, we include reinforcing Invest in Guatemala. Reactivating mixed foreign trade forums. Recovering commercial leadership in Central America, re-launching PRONACOM and lobbying and promoting the FTA with the USA. We are analyzing “bench marking” and what neighboring countries offer, to position ourselves adequately.

A: To the apparel industry in particular, what advantages does Guatemala offers to foreign investors?

MC: It is the largest economy in the region. Geographically, our position is unsurpassed and we have a highly qualified labor force. We will have a very accessible web page to speed the process of attracting foreign investors. As part of the PACIT program, we shall be more aggressive, including more Consulates and Embassies of Guatemala abroad. We will offer very favorable conditions.

A: For example?

MC: Eliminate bureaucratic procedures. Speeding customs procedures, opening of new business’ procedures.
