Aun cuando el CAFTA entre en vigencia,
los fabricantes de vestuario en Centro América y Caribe
deben enfrentar los siguientes retos: ver recuadro
Los gobiernos de la región juegan un papel importante al
ofrecer las condiciones idóneas para que el CAFTA sea beneficioso
y promueva la actividad exportadora. Deben trabajar para integrar,
facilitar y estandarizar los procesos aduaneros, proveer infraestructura
y servicios portuarios adecuados y seguros, así como facilitar
y promover las inversiones.
Con relación al impacto de la desaparición de cuotas
en el 2005, creemos que el volumen de exportaciones de CBI se
verá afectado. Muchas empresas que no se han preparado
para enfrentar los retos de la competitividad tenderán
a desaparecer. Las empresas que sobrevivirán, serán
aquellas que se han reconvertido y acogido con firmeza y agresividad
los cambios necesarios para competir en un mundo globalizado.

Even if CAFTA becomes a reality, apparel manufacturers in Central
America and the Caribbean have to face the following challenges:

The governments of the region play a key role in offering suitable
conditions for the CAFTA, so that it is beneficial and promotes
the export activity. They should work on integrating, facilitating
and standardizing the customs’ processes, and providing
suitable and safe infrastructure and harbor services, as well
as facilitating and promoting investments.
Regarding the impact of the phase out of quotas by 2,005 in the
region, we believe that the volume of exports from CBI will be
affected. Many of the companies that are not prepared to face
the challenges of global competitiveness, will tend to disappear.
The companies that will survive will be those who have converted
and welcome with firmness and aggressiveness the changes needed
to compete in a global environment.
