package. |

In
recent years apparel companies, retailers and brand managers have undergone
a fundamental change in how they operate their businesses; both in
garment sourcing and in their approach to product development. They
no longer
want to create all of the detailed specifications or source and monitor
the manufacturing operations. Rather, they expect that samples and
price quotes be received from the vendors within days and then place
orders
for what is called “full package production” without managing
the risks and complexities of raw materials or manufacturing. This
method of sourcing has existed in Asia for many years. For Central
America to
compete they must learn how to provide samples quickly and deliver
full package production. In a sense, apparel companies and brand managers have shifted from being merchants, the creators and sellers of new products, to marketers, the creators and sellers of concepts. When they were merchants, their focus was on the product – the design, the development, the detailed specifications and the close monitoring of the manufacturing; in short, they had tight and complete control of the entire process.
